The Myth is an olfactory art project centered on the poppy ,a symbol of martyrdom and resurrection in Lebanon and Palestine. According to Phoenician/Canaanite mythology, the god Adonis, slain by a boar, bled across the land, causing red poppies to bloom each spring. This project also investigates the scent of the martyr, inspired by accounts from Gaza and Lebanon, specifically during the genocide, where witnesses described a musky fragrance radiating from the bodies of martyrs— a belief rooted in Islamic tradition. To make this poppy, I collected 200 poppies that emerged from the destruction in South Lebanon. Each flower represents the blood of a martyr killed by the Israeli Forces during the war on Lebanon that began in October 2023. These resurrected bodies are immortalized through the pigment from each poppy, while I reimagine the martyr’s scent based on collected testimonies.
