From 2012 to 2015, Valerie Cachard and Gregory Buchakjian recovered in Beirut’s abandoned dwellings, documents and objects left by the former inhabitants. In plot 335, they found an agenda from year 1979 containing a “Military War Manual” written during an instruction journey in the Soviet Union. The agenda is an archaeological artefact linked to a specific period of Lebanon’s chaotic history. It is also a latent warrior object. It is inactive but could be ‘awakened’ at any time. It could be compared to the mines and ammunition disseminated on the territories of past and present conflicts that haven’t exploded yet and were not defused. This piece in which still and filmed images interact with various layers of sound is in the continuity of archive-based interventions produced in Lebanon and more specifically the filmed performance from the same artists Abandoned Dwellings. Archive created in the context of the exhibition Abandoned Dwellings. Display of Systems, at Beirut’s Sursock Museum.
